DIYRobots

Create in the App, Play in Real Life

Branding, UX/UI
2018

Background

DIYRobots is a STEM-inspired mobile app designed for kids to create custom robots that can be 3D printed and delivered directly to their doorsteps. I led the creative team in designing this innovative app, aiming to merge the fun of toy customization with educational STEM principles.

Challenge

The project began as DIYToyShop, offering a wide range of customizable toys including dolls, pets, and trucks. However, due to budget constraints, we decided to focus on one type of toy for the MVP (Minimum Viable Product), ultimately choosing robots. The challenge was to create a cost-effective platform where kids could design these robots, incorporate STEM-related puzzles and mini-games, and receive their custom toys by mail.

Solution

We collaborated with a 3D modeler to design printable robot components and integrate these models into the app. My team then developed the app's user interface, which included a dashboard for managing designs, a building section for customization, and a secure payment and shipping system with parental controls.

For the MVP, we simplified the user experience by allowing children to choose from a preselected list of robot heads, arms, chests, backpacks, and legs, and then customize their creations with one of seven colors. To reinforce STEM education, we gamified the building process with mini-games that involved hammering, screwing nails, and using wrenches when attaching each body part. Children could then name their robots and save their designs.

Parents and children could view a list of saved designs within the app. They were able to purchase a printed version of their custom robot design directly from the app, facilitating a seamless experience from creation to delivery.

This video takes you through the step-by-step process of building a robot in the app.

Results

The app was developed with functionalities that promote STEM learning and interactive engagement. By incorporating elements of design, engineering, and problem-solving, the app provided an educational yet entertaining experience for children.

Conclusion

We successfully built an app where kids can choose from a variety of robot parts, customize their colors, and bring their creations to life through interactive mini-games. DIYRobots not only encourages creativity but also introduces children to foundational STEM concepts in a fun and engaging way.
